The format is defined by three seals: a top crimp seal, a bottom crimp seal, and a vertical back fin seal that runs the length of the pouch. No gussets, no zipper, no stand-up base — just a clean, economical cylinder of film wrapped around the product.
Pillow bags are formed on vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) machinery. A single roll of flat film is pulled over a forming collar that folds it into a tube around a vertical filling tube. A longitudinal heat-seal bar closes the back fin seal as the tube descends, then pairs of cross-seal jaws crimp the top of one bag and the bottom of the next simultaneously. A knife cuts between the two seals, dropping a finished pouch. Because film moves in a single continuous web, VFFS lines routinely hit 80 to 250 bags per minute on commodity products and over 400 bpm on multi-lane snack lines — figures that premade-pouch formats simply cannot match.
The trade-off is shelf presence. A pillow bag lies flat, so it needs secondary packaging (a display box, clip strip or printed shipper) to stand on a retail shelf. Brands that want upright presentation graduate to a gusseted or stand-up variant. But when the math is per-unit cost and throughput, nothing beats the pillow format — which is why it still accounts for the lion's share of flexible packaging produced globally each year.
