Spouted Pouch

A spouted pouch is a stand-up flexible pouch fitted with a rigid plastic spout and screw cap. The cap turns an otherwise ordinary doypack-style pouch into a recloseable, pourable container — one that consumers can open, dispense from, reseal, and store in the fridge without spills. That combination has made the format the dominant choice for juices, smoothies, sauces, baby food and a growing list of liquid household products.
The defining component is the spout-and-cap assembly. The spout is a short rigid neck molded from polypropylene or polyethylene, with a flange at the base that gets heat-sealed into a pre-punched hole on the pouch. During filling, a dosing nozzle seats into the spout opening and fills volumetrically; the cap is then applied and torqued down. The result is a hermetically sealed, tamper-evident package that consumers can repeatedly open and close. Capacities typically run from 100 ml single-serve juice pouches up to 1-litre family packs of detergent.
Production runs on horizontal form-fill-seal (HFFS) premade-pouch machinery equipped with an automatic spout insertion station. Pre-made pouches (with the bottom gusset already formed) are pulled from a magazine, the spout is picked from a vibratory bowl feeder and heat-sealed into its pre-punched hole, the product is filled through the spout, and the cap is applied and torqued — all in-line at 30 to 50 pouches per minute. Compared with rigid bottles, spouted pouches deliver 80–90% source reduction in plastic, lower shipping weight, and superior shelf presentation — which is why the format continues to displace PET bottles across liquid food and household categories.

Are spouted pouches recyclable?

Multi-layer barrier structures (PET/NY/PE, PET/AL/PE) are not curbside-recyclable because the layers cannot be separated — they require specialized recycling streams or store take-back programs.
What's the typical filling capacity?
Most spouted pouches hold between 100 and 1000 ml, with sweet spots at 200 ml (single-serve juice and baby food) and 500–750 ml (family-pack sauces and detergents). Filling is volumetric via a nozzle that seats into the spout during filling, then the cap is applied and torqued down.
